OUR SURROUNDINGS SHAPE OUR LIVES

Meissen, Saxony, 1885. Busy boat transport on the Elbe River. Well-developed railway network. Proximity to Dresden and the Seilitz-Lothainer mining district, rich in highly plastic faience clay. It was under these circumstances that Meissen tiles were invented and patented in Meissen in 1855, which initiated the development of the German ceramics industry in Saxony. For MEISSEN KERAMIK, this was the start of a long, amazing journey from the manufacture of tiles to the production of sophisticated interior furnishings.

History of Meissen Keramik

The “patented Meissen tile” is created

At the dawn of the 19th century, smooth, white “Berlin stoves” come back in style in Prussia. In response to this trend, Gottfried Heinrich Melzer develops and patents a heat-resistant tile — the famous “patented Meissen tile”.

MELZER AND TEICHERT BEGIN COOPERATION

Melzer joins forces with Carl Teichert, the Meissen master potter. It is in his workshop on Hahnemann Square in Meissen that the artisanal production of the “patented Meissen tiles” begins.

FIRST CARL TEICHER STOVE AND CHAMOTTE FACTORY IS OPENS

Inspired by Melzer’s invention, Teichert designs tile stoves. With their technical and artistic qualities, they cement the reputation of Meissen stoves as an efficient and beautiful source of heat. The first Carl Teichert stove and chamotte factory is built on the New Market Square in Meissen.

APPEARANCE AT THE FIRST PRESTIGIOUS EXHIBITION

Only 6 years later, the company has such a rich and attractive offer that it appears at the General German Craft and Industrial Exhibition in Württemberg in the “Luxury earthenware and stoves” group.

DEATH OF CARL TEICHERT

The Franco-Prussian War continues. Carl Teichert has a fatal accident while on a relief mission for the German army. His wife and seven children — still minors, become owners of the factory.

ESTABLISHMENT OF THE MEISSEN STOVE AND CHAMOTTE FACTORY, PRE-CARL TEICHERT

On 1 October, at a price of 250,000 thalers, the Carl Teichert Stove and Chamotte Factory is taken over by a joint stock company. The company begins operation as the Meissen Stove and Chamotte Factory, formerly Carl Teichert.

MEDAL OF MERIT

A year later, at the Universal Exhibition in Vienna, the company receives a medal of merit. Meissen stoves are already widely known outside Saxony and are exported to southern Germany, Austria-Hungary, Russia, Belgium, England and Switzerland.

APPERANCE OF NEW PRODUCTS

Reacting to the consumer changing tastes and fashions, Teichert's plants are increasingly turning to new solutions. They go beyond white tile, standard and popular to date, and start to produce colourful stove tiles.

Since that year, the company’s products have been inscribed with a sequence of letters in a horizontal oval frame forming the word “MEISSEN” and a five-pointed star under the inscription.

DEVELOPMENT OF THE COMPANY AND DIVERSIFICATION OF PRODUCTION

The past century has seen the formation and consolidation of a company culture geared towards reliability, perfection and innovation in the areas of both production, technology and the attitude towards employees. Design, beauty and aesthetics become the hallmarks of MEISSEN KERAMIK products. All this, despite the changing economic and political realities, laid the foundations for the dynamic development of the company in the 20th century.
